Some Kind of Exciting Things

Kind of exciting thing #1:

My first rose bloom! My other ones have been eaten by deer. The pears and apples on our trees have distracted the deer, apparently. They have also left my other flowers alone.

They make me happy.

Kind of exciting thing #2:

I watched some ants kill each other.

Ellie sat on an anthill and they got mad and ended up attacking another anthill and a gory battle ensued. There was a lot of ant death.

Half of those ants are dead. I did nothing to stop them.

This one is exciting, meaning that it causes me to increase my production of adrenaline. I almost stepped on this sucker (barefoot) outside our door. Ew. And ew.

Slightly more exciting thing #3:

That's Ellie's smile.

Got to wear your seatbelt.

So Will had dug a large hole to get to the septic tank lid. It wasn't where we thought it was. So we rented a backhoe. It was too close to the house for comfort, but we had limited room. After digging for a while Will came back inside and told me that he wasn't sure if it was good news of not, but that he had hit water. Dirty, stinky water that filled up the bottom of the hole. After freaking out and thinking that we had busted the pipeline, we decided that we had only hit the leech field, where the water leeches out of the septic tank and back into the earth. That was good, but also annoying because we still didn't know where the tank was.

Finally, after a couple hours of digging and begging people for help (they didn't help), Will found a smallish orange-covered pipe extending up to a few inches below the surface. Apparently this is some sort of extension that allows the tank to be pumped, even though it is 6 feet below the surface. If we had known that we had one of those, it would have made a huge difference. We were considering putting one in ourselves, so it turned out kind of nice.

So on one hand, we don't have to pay lots of money for someone to come and find it for us, but on the other hand, if we had known, it could have saved us lots of money too.

So we have officially found our septic tank. It has been an exciting process. Not. I NEVER want a septic tank again. Totally not worth it.

So this post is only kind of exciting. More fun ones will come soon.

  1. An epic ant battle...glad you enjoyed that. I hate spiders! (Shuddering) I'm excited for you that you finally found your septic tank, but not excited that it cost you so much money to do so. On the bright side, it can now be pumped. Yeah!
